Computer Science Scholarships: You Can Get One

There are several computer science scholarships available for anyone studying in the United States. Most are available through the university offering the program, although there are also a few programs available to anyone, mostly offered by corporations who will want to hire you after you graduate.

University-offered computer science scholarships often are applied for after one has already entered the program, and sometimes are awarded to graduate students to encourage them to further their studies. For example, Iowa State University has the John Vincent Atanasoff Graduate Award, which is awarded to graduate students to encourage them to study for a PhD Degree. Conversely, at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, the Honeywell Scholarship is available to freshmen computer science majors. Most universities have computer science scholarships available to incoming students and those graduating, as well as some applicable to those in their sophomore or junior years of the program.

As mentioned earlier, several corporations offer scholarships at various schools. Cisco offers one such scholarship, a one-time $2500 computer science scholarship offered to students who are seen to have made significant contributions to the field of computer science during their time as a student.

Lockheed Martin has several scholarships in the field of computer science. One offered is catered toward highly active women in the field of computer science. Lockheed Martin additionally gives money to computer science departments so as to continue their funding and take the schools on as corporate partners.

Microsoft gives the largest computer science scholarship, paying for full tuition, room, and board, as well as a twelve-month paid internship. They offer four types of technical scholarships, all for undergrads. The following is a list of the four technical scholarships offered:

* There is a general scholarship

* A scholarship specifically for one is for women, another is for minorities, and the last is for students with disabilities.

This large amount of corporate support for computer science scholarships means that rarely is a graduate without work after they leave school. The multiple offerings by corporations to fund a student's education show that they are in active need of computer scientists. There are many other corporate-offered computer science scholarships I have not gone into, such as one offered by AT&T, Chevron, or Google.

There are computer science scholarships offered by many other organizations, such as the American Meteorological Society and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition to the Department of Homeland Security, several other government entities offer scholarships for those studying computer sciences. The Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and the various military branches also offer computer science scholarships.

There are many scholarships available for anyone studying computer science. These scholarships are offered from a great variety of sources, all you have to do is search for them. The requirements for such scholarships are not much more than what is required to enter most computer science departments in universities, and some come with internships, paid or not, which get you a foothold into the professional world, something that is very useful after graduation.
