Department Of Computer Science: A Place To Study And Research

Most universities these days have a Department of Computer Science, and those that don't have a Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. A Department of Computer Science is typically the largest research department in a university, and, depending on the university, may be the largest department on campus. Other Universities have such large Department of Computer Sciences that they have split off to separate Schools of Computer Science.

Department of Computer Science is very important because they provide opportunities and environments necessary for researchers to advance the field of computing or to just learn about computer science. This is useful for furthering science as a whole, as well as having practical uses, such as the creation of computer programming languages and new technologies.

University of Maryland has a Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, which has undergraduate programs in both Computer Engineering and Computer Science, as well as graduate programs in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering. A few notable sponsors of the department are NASA, as well as the Army and Navy Research Laboratories. Computer science is one of the largest majors in the University and involves classes from learning basic computer programming languages to analysis theoretical algorithms. A notable course offered here is one that specializes in games, animation, and interactive media, and works in conjunction with the University's Visual Arts Department.

Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Computer Science was one of the first in the nation, officially formed in 1965. Although the Department has split off to become a complete School of Computer Science, I feel that is noteworthy for the few unique aspects of its earlier years. When the Department was formed, it not only recruited graduate students from mathematic and electrical engineering undergraduate programs, but also psychology and English majors as well. Since it became a School of Computer Science in the late 1980s, it has grown greatly, and now offers majors in over a dozen types of computer science.

University of Rochester's Computer Science Department (URCS) is a well respected department of computer science. It is known for having a focus on emphasis on computer vision, robots, and understanding natural language. This makes it a wonderful place to study if one is interested in studying Artificial Intelligence.

Stanford University also has a very well known Department of Computer Science. Stanford's department focuses on artificial intelligence and its application to robotics, similar to University of Maryland's program.

University of California - Berkeley's Department of Computer Science has a different focus. There emphasis is on theoretical mathematics and using computers to analysis algorithms. In addition, they also apply these algorithms to data management, a very practical use of computer sciences.

These are but a few of the more notable Department of Computer Science in the country. There are many more with different focuses that cater toward different types of professions, whether the student wants to eventually move on to a professional career or wants to stay on the faculty as a researcher. Nonetheless, any computer science you study will be a rewarding career.
