Masters Computer Science: Choosing The Right School

There are a lot of universities that offer masters computer science degrees. Some may be elite private universities, while others may be public state colleges. This article details a few of the more select colleges who are known for having some of the best programs for getting a masters computer science degree.

MIT is perhaps the most well known school of its sort, and its computer science department is the largest in the school. It is an extremely elite school, but that is easily justified by the quality of education and research that comes from people who get a masters computer science degree at MIT. It is the highest ranked engineering school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, proving the point of it being a high quality institute.

Stanford is another quality institute, only just barely behind MIT, according the same U.S. News & World Report. Stanford emphasizes the importance of the development of artificial intelligence and applying it to robotics.

Berkeley, according to U.S. News & World Report ranking, was tied with Stanford, but had a stronger emphasis on theoretical mathematics than robotics.

Carnegie Mellon is among the more elite schools that offer masters computer science degrees, but is not as well known as MIT, Stanford, or Berkeley. It had one of the first Computer Science Departments in the country, and has evolved to offer a wide range of degrees, ranging from programming to theoretic algorithms or robotics.

DePaul University, the largest Catholic college in the nation, is also home to one of the largest computer science schools offering masters computer science degrees. The large size of the program allows the School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Information Systems to offer a large range of practical programs and respond quickly to market demands for a changing requirement in the job market.

University of Maryland has a Department of Computer Science and Electrical engineering that offers two types of master's computer science degrees, one in computer engineering and the other in computer science. University of Maryland is one of very few universities that are sponsored in part by a government entity. In this case, three government sponsors: Army Research Laboratories, Navy Research Laboratories, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration, better known as NASA.

Online programs occasionally offer masters computer science degrees, although rarely do they offer any degree higher than that. Their degrees may range from robotics to theoretical algorithms to analysis human natural language.

Each different program has different prerequisite classes that must be taken for credit hours. While the more advanced programs may require several years of undergraduate study at that university, and additional studies in other topics, less difficult programs including online universities typically require little prior training, if they require any at all.

There are many places to get a masters computer science degree. There are many similarities between class works, but chances are no two programs will be exactly the same. Each offers a slightly different range of knowledge and the depth at which various topics are researched. One constant between the all programs is that once you receive your master's computer science degree, numerous new job opportunities will become available.
